IMAGE OF THE MONTH (19) March 2011

We remain in England for our latest featured photographer.

A warm welcome to Rex Bamber.

I was born in Tooting, London on January 7th 1923 and started photography as a hobby when young, volunteered for RAF in 1941. Served for five years as a photographer. This included 14 months in Iceland,  several months in the UK with photo recon squadron then posted to India. Then to Madras and on to Burma, down Malaya and following the Japanese surrender finished up in Singapore. Demobbed back to  England in November 1946. Got a job with a government photo unit and photographed a wide variety of things including royal weddings.

Early 1951 things were swinging in Chelsea and I was offered a job as a studio manager with a well known photographer called Hans Wild. He was an ex LIFE magazine photographer and had more work than he could  handle, I spent about 5 years with him. I started working with magazines on mainly fashion and celebrity shoots. After time with Hans I went out on my own. Still doing fashion but discovered that I  had a knack for photographing food, campaigns for Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury's and many cookery books followed. I was doing quite well and picked up a fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society and  gained considerable judging experience sitting on one of their assesment panels.

Went on working till my early 70s at Group Studios in Kensington, London run by Murray Irving and Desmond Waring. I married my wife, Margot in 1962 and we moved to Surrey later that  year, my daughter Kate was born in 1964 and I now have a grandchild called Daisy who is 10. In the mid 90' I saw an exhibition at Fairfield Halls by Croydon Camera Club, joined the club, made many friends, and the rest,  as they say is history !
