IMAGE OF THE MONTH (11) July 2010

We travel to Surrey, UK, for our latest featured photographer.

A big welcome to Roy King.

"It really is a long time since photography first captured my interest - when I became a member of Carshalton Camera Club in 1962, and where I still remain as club President.

Several years went by before I began fully to appreciate the unique qualities of photography and the challenges it presented, which was about the time that I started to look at the world in a more individual way and to try and develop a personal style. This eventually lead to gaining the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1970 and the Fellowship two years later.

During these years I was living in the Brighton area, at first taking many pictures of the South Downs, convincing myself that I would become a landscape photographer. However it was it was when I turned my attention to the coastal fringe and started to use people and other elements in my pictures that everything started to change.

I then began to take in the urban scene, looking at the ordinary everyday kind of world that surrounded me, believing much of it to be considerably less ordinary than we might imagine.

In 1987 I became one of the founder members of the Arena photo group, and in 1995 I had the honour of being invited to become member of the London Salon of Photography. Later I joined the Mirage group of mainly Kent and Surrey based photographers.

Last year I self-published a book of many of my images.

Being a photographer still excites me as much as it has ever done, and I still get a great kick out of the finding and taking of images, which is just about the greatest thrill of all".
